The Amphicyon were large (approx. 300 kg), carnivorous, quadrupedal mammals (pseudo-canids) also known as "Bear-Dogs" placed by Julian May in the Pliocene, but more accurately living during the later periods of the middle Oligocene and early Miocene. The Tanu used their coercive powers and training to make effective guard dogs of the bear-dogs.
