The Adversary is the fourth and final book of the Saga of the Pliocene Exile (or the Saga of the Exiles in the UK) by American author Julian May. It continues the series from the events after the rise of Aiken Drum as High King over the Tanu host and moves story surrounding the high powered, metapsychic rebels and their enigmatic leader, Marc Remillard, who fled into Exile from pursuing Galactic Milieu forces.

The Tanu have regrouped after the calamity of the Great Flood and the settling of the civil war between the Aiken Drum faction and the remnants of the Host of Nontusvel. Uneasy unity between the Firvulag and the Howlers along with intermittent cooperation with the Lowlives has strengthened their cause against the Tanu. The Lowlives now strengthened with much of Group Green exiles and others continue with their ultimate plan to destroy the time gateway, while the children of the Rebels consider the possibility of making the gateway two-way by building a second time-gate back to the Milieu time in cooperation with Aiken, so they can return to their own time. Marc Remillard and most of the members of the adult Rebels endeavor to stop their children while trying to manipulate the factions in Europe into helping.
